Although fat bodies may be considered by the larger society as aesthetically "revolting," LeBesco (communication arts, Marymount Manhattan College) argues that in political and social contexts, they are revolting against received notions about health, beauty, and nature. She examines recent political discourse about fat bodies in order to explore the way different constructs of fatness disrupt (or enforce) normality. She discusses the way that fat bodies in the United States are marked as "failed citizens," explores the political implications of fashions for "fat(ter) women," analyzes popular culture depictions of fatness as a disability, and explores the use of the Internet in offering alternative narratives through the disembodiment of discourse.
