Miller expanded her Ph.D. dissertation into a text that seeks to explain the predicament of writers governed by a socialist regime during the Cold War. It focuses on the relationship from the 1960s to 1989 between the East German government and three authors: Biermann, a lyricist; Wolf, a novelist; and Muller, a dramatist. Miller analyzes the political content of the authors' works as well as how East German and West German critics evaluated them. The study shows how the writers' interpretation of socialism increasingly deviated from that of the East German regime, and how each encountered increasing problems and conflicts with the Ministry of Culture.
