Heil (New Testament, Catholic U. of America) places as his subtitle what he believes is the main theme running through Paul's letter to the Philippians. He looks at the New Testament book as a whole, proposing an entirely new chiastic structure embracing the ten units that comprise and organize the letter. Within the large chiastic structure, he argues, each of the letter's 10 units likewise exhibits its own individual chiastic structure. He finds this structure to be the key to how the author communicated with his audience. John Paul Heil is Professor of New Testament at The Catholic University of America. His books include Ephesians: Empowerment to Walk in Love for the Unity of All in Christ and Colossians: Encouragement to Walk in All Wisdom as Holy Ones in Christ (Society of Biblical Literature); The Gospel of Mark as Model for Action: A Reader-Response Commentary (Paulist); and The Death and Resurrection of Jesus: A Narrative-Critical Reading of Matthew 26–28 (Fortress).
