The authors (both U. of Missouri) are interested in patterns of education, rehabilitation services, socialization and ideas about blindness that to some extent produce patterns of blind lifestyles that include independence and self-reliance, isolation and self-pity, or complete dependence on government services and welfare. They believe educational and rehabilitative services based on positive belief systems and practices will empower people who are blind to realize the fullest potential for their lives. They cover rehabilitation, the ingredients of empowerment, professional workers and their role in empowerment, the characteristics of a model state agency involved with the blind, "blending in" (the process of making people who are blind acceptable to people who are sighted, especially to employers), and development of communication and mobility skills.
