This guide presents practical, step-by-step methods for synthesizing, characterizing, biofunctionalizing, and applying nanoparticles at biomolecular, cellular, and tissue/organism scales. Each chapter begins with an abstract and key terms, and ends with summary points. Early chapters describe the interface between nanoparticles, including quantum dots and carbon nanotubes, with biomolecules such as peptides and proteins for biosensing and biocatalytic applications. Later chapters describe the use of nanoparticles and nanoassemblies for cellular applications such as intracellular trafficking and engineering cell fates. Four chapters are devoted to the emerging field of nanomedicine, and explore the use of magnetic, polymeric, metal, and multifunctional nanoparticles as potential therapeutic and imaging agents. The book also looks at modeling of interactions between nanoparticles and cell and tissues, and describes FDA methods for characterizing nanoparticle-bioconjugates.
