Should aphasia be considered an impairment subject to eradication through assessment and management leading to lessening its effects, or should it be considered less of a language issue and more of a producer of psychosocial consequences? Treating those with aphasia as impaired, as patients requiring treatment has increasingly come under fire from the disability/ability movement and patients themselves, while many clinicians continue to perceive aphasia in the more traditional "impairment" model. This collection of describes both perspectives so practitioners can make decisions for themselves about which approach to prefer and how to treat patients as they wish to be treated. Here the contributors of 20 articles describe the cognitive-impairment perspective, consequence-oriented treatment, life consequences approaches, intervention techniques, and a variety of case studies relating to different approaches to treatment. No patients contributed to this collection. Annotation c2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
