Schmidt (music education, Arizona State U.) compiles 16 selected presentations from the 2007 Symposium of the Society for Music Teacher Education, held in September 2007 in Greensboro, North Carolina, that consider new directions in the preparation and professional development of music educators. Music educators and music education scholars from the US discuss examples of successful partnerships and collaborations among music teacher educators, classroom teachers, administrators, universities, and others, as well as other topics, many reflecting collaboration, such as beginning teachers' socialization and skill development; mentoring programs for new and experienced teachers; popular music and culture in curriculum; diversity and students' intercultural competence; effective instructional language use; and online communities. Margaret Schmidt is associate professor of music education at Arizona State University (ASU), where she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in music education and is director of the ASU String Project. Her research focuses on ways teachers, particularly beginners, think about teaching.
