Passerini (cultural history, University of Turin) looks at the idea of a Eurocentric attitude to love in the 1930's in this complex study, originally written in Italian. She examines both literature and the lives of real people in order to demonstrate how views of love, romantic, religious and collective agape were established by an essential self-conception of being European. This is blended with the tense politics of the time, the rise of fascism and state support of anti-Semitism. Several chapters are devoted to the European Jew as either totally assimilated or completely the "other". Gender concepts play a large part in Passerini's thinking, as shown in her astute dissection of the play The Dybbuk which brings together the themes that she stresses.
