Shuhei Yamamoto is a lazy, woman-chasing senior student in Kyoritsu College who finds himself in the unenviable position of not graduating, because of his imminent failure in Professor Anayama's class. With no other option available to him, Shuhei agrees to join the college's Sumo club--for which Professor Anayama coaches--in exchange for the needed credit in Professor Anayama's class. The Sumo club has only one member, Aoki, and a girl who takes care of the club, Natsuko. While Shuhei must recruit more members in order to compete, that is not his only obstable. A mismatched group of underdogs must fight for their titles, but can they do it?

Masayuki Suo is one of Japan's most famous movie
directors. He is most famous in the United States for
1996's Shall We Dance?, a movie which Suo both
directed and wrote. The subtitled Japanese version
did well enough in The States to eventually elicit a
Hollywood adaptation in 2004, in which Richard
Gere and Jennifer Lopez starred.
Born in 1956, Suo made his debut assistant directing
an erotic movie--Scanty Doll in 1984. But it was his
work directing his first movie for general audiences-
-1989's Fancy Dance, which follows the life of
young monks in a Buddhist temple--that garnered
him critical attention. In 1991, the novel from which
Shall We Sumo? (Shiko Funjatta) was adapted was
serialized in a Japanese magazine while Suo was
directing the film.
Suo's versatility as a director is evident in the diverse
themes and subject matter of his films: a college
sumo club in Shiko Funjatta (Shall We Sumo?),
social dancing in Shall We Dansu? (Shall We
Dance?), and a criminal trial for a sexual harassment
case in Soredemo Boku wa Yattenai (Still, I Didn't
Do It). His wife, Tamiyo Kusakari, is a renowned
