US anthropologists describe and interpret archaeological and ethnographic evidence for changes in the structure of prehistoric and modern societies that parallel the establishment of permanent, or at least persistent, leadership. Among their topics are food sharing and magnaminity among Martu Aborigines; political alliance, economic resources, and reproductive success in the Ecuadorian Amazon; the evolution of managerial elites in intermediate societies; of leaders and legacies in Native North America; leadership in middle-range African societies; and identifying the pathways to permanent leadership.
