A 1707 act of parliament established the library of Narcissus Marsh (1638-1713) as a public library, and a conference was held to commemorate the tricentennial of the event, at which scholars of the broad range of humanities explore the context and impact of the library on the intellectual and scholarly milieu of Ireland and Britain during the century that bracketed it. Their topics include Marsh and his contemporary bishops as legislators, Philip Skelton and the Irish origins of the British Protestant counter-enlightenment, Dudly Loftus' annals as an example of writing history in 17th-century Ireland, and the Synge library catalogue of 1763.
