The Dublin Liberties, 1600-1850

Much of the lordship of Ireland was organized into liberties, or semi-autonomous urban jurisdictions, from the 13th century onwards. This work examines the medieval origins of the liberties of Dublin: the manors of St. Sepulchre and of Thomas Court and Donore, and the two smaller liberties of St. Patrick's and Christ Church. The study looks at how the lords of the liberties controlled the economic life of their territories and how their activities led to tensions with the municipal authorities and with each other. Chapters explore life in the liberties, the manor courts, and disputed jurisdictions. The book is illustrated with two b&w maps and one photo. Milne is historiographer of the Church of Ireland and Keeper of the Archives at Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin. The book is distributed in the US by ISBS.
