A Room in the City is a self-revelatory journey into a world of darkness and light, a place of blatant lies and transcendent truths, and represents the culmination of Gabor Gasztonyi's five-year project of photographing the residents of the Cobalt, Balmoral, Regent, and Sunrise Hotels in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.
Gasztonyi's lens reveals a Vancouver with deep roots in an otherwise forgotten past, a neighbourhood populated with people seeking shelter, safety, and love in extreme social conditions. The people in these photographs are presented in private moments, with respect and dignity-in their rooms and on the streets-as they wished to be seen.
The Vancouver illuminated on these pages is a sister city of other global late-Commonwealth cities, where burgeoning pressures have led to new forms of social organization. A Room in the City is a portrait of the people who endure these pressures daily and give a human face to the ongoing struggle to survive.
Gasztonyi's style continues in the great documentary tradition of Anders Petersen and Josef Koudelka, the photographer of the Roma.

作者簡介
Gabor Gasztonyi has had exhibitions across Canada, including Vancouver, Montreal, and the Arta Gallery in Toronto. His awards include The Professional Photographers of BC Nikon Prize, Society of Canadian Artists Award of Excellence, runner-up of the Magnum Scotia Bank Scholarship and a Canadian nomination for the International Black & White Spider Awards. He operates a photographic studio and Art Gallery in New Westminster BC.
Gabor Mate is the author of four books: When the Body Says No: The Cost of Hidden Stress, and Scattered Minds: A New Look at the Origins and Healing of Attention Deficit Disorder. The third book, Hold on to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers, he co-authored with developmental psychologist Gordon Neufeld. His most recent title is the bestselling In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction.
