Sluss (teacher education and professional services, College of William & Mary) and Jarrett (early childhood education, Georgia State U.) present 18 chapters of research on play and culture from contributors from around the world working in different disciplines, such as psychology, education, anthropology, biology, history, and sociology. The volume, seventh in a series, is sponsored by the Association for the Study of Play, a professional group of researchers who study the topic and its importance in the study of culture and human development and welfare. The volume examines the intersection of play and culture, and scholarship, theory, and studies on subjects such as children's views, teachers' beliefs, cultural differences, and playground safety. Other chapters address adult playfulness and creativity, how play helps prepare children for reading, honesty and fairness, and ritual role-play.
