The Paper Wall

This volume explores the relationship between the competing protagonists of the Irish War of Independence (1919-1921) (often referred to as a war "in which newspaper ink was spilled more freely than blood") and the Irish daily newspapers. Individual chapters discuss how the British government and its Irish administration sought to influence and control the press; republican use of the Irish Bulletin and their relationship with the Irish press and with foreign correspondents; Freeman's Journal and the Irish Independent coverage of the policies of the Dail Eirann (the republican revolutionary parliament), Irish Republican Army violence, and Crown violence; military suppression of the Cork Examiner; the editorial and journalistic stances of The Irish Times towards the Dail and British rule; and the role of The Times of London in promoting self-rule in Ireland.
