Kubler (Asian studies, Williams College), who trained American diplomats in Chinese and other languages, offers a textbook on written Chinese to students and other readers taking classes or learning independently for business, travel, cultural studies, or other reasons. The text introduces 288 of the highest-frequency characters in their simplified and traditional forms and about 700 common words written with them, in the context of sentences and reading passages. It explains the structure of each character, contrasting them with similar characters, and includes character differentiation drills. Each lesson introduces six new characters and many words. The text is meant to be used with Basic Written Chinese Practice Essentials and Basic Spoken Chinese and Basic Spoken Chinese Practice Essentials. The CD contains recordings of readings, new characters, and new vocabulary, in addition to appendices of punctuation marks, characters with multiple pronunciations, a simplified-traditional character conversion table, and an English-Chinese glossary. 作者簡介
Cornelius C. Kubler is Stanfield Professor of Asian Studies at Williams College, where he teaches Chinese. He was formerly Chinese Language Training Supervisor and Chair of the Department of Asian and African Languages at the Foreign Service Institute, U.S. Department of State, where he trained American diplomats in Chinese and other languages.
Jerling Guo Kubler is a graduate of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures of Soochow University, Taipei. Her experience in language education spans more than 35 years. She has taught all levels of Chinese as a Second/Foreign Language from pre-kindergarten to university level at institutions including Williams College, Eisenhower College and Taipei Language Institute.
