商品簡介
The first edition published over 80 years ago, Straight and Crooked Thinking is a field-guide to linguistic manipulations, logical fallacies and other ways that people's thinking is led astray (by themselves or others). Thouless considers different ways of using language, words and facts, definitions and their difficulties, rhetorical underhandedness, prejudice, pitfalls of analogy, oratory and suggestion. The final chapters turn to an examination of what straight thinking is and the future of it in a world of persuasion and simulation. Then two appendixes present "37 dishonest tricks commonly used in argument, with the method of overcoming them" and a discussion that illustrates crooked thinking. Robert Thouless was C.R. Thouless's grandfather, as well as a psychologist who specialized in logic and rationality. C.R.'s changes are largely with regard to historical examples, which still date back to the late '70s. This is intended for a lay audience. Distributed by Trafalgar. Annotation c2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
