商品簡介
Author Noble, now retired from the US Coast Guard, details the Coast Guard's alien migrant interdiction operations (AMIO) from 1959 to 2008 in this narrative account focusing on the Coast Guard's work intercepting undocumented migrants from Cuba, Haiti, and China. The author seeks to put a human face on the Coast Guard officers and the undocumented migrants trying to escape poverty or persecution, in order to counter the Coast Guard's ineffective communication with the public and the media. Officers are portrayed as heroic, ethical, and compassionate as they cope with the heartbreak of these operations and the potential for violence. Another main theme is the political background of changing policies over the years. The author draws on oral histories, interviews with sailors and refugees, and historical research. The book is illustrated with b&w photos and maps, and includes an appendix of statistics on undocumented migrants intercepted by the US Coast Guard from 1982-2009. Noble has received the US Coast Guard Distinguished Public Service Award and the US Maritime Literature Award. Annotation c2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
