A matrilineal narrative either tells the stories of several generations of women at once or shows how the identity of a central character is formed by her female ancestors. In this study, Yu utilizes psychoanalytic subject-relations theories to investigate matrilineal narratives in contemporary women's writing. The works of more than a dozen authors and thinkers are examined, including Toni Morrison, Jamaica Kincaid, Joy Kogawa, Amy Tan, and Judy Budnitz. Yu teaches at National I-Lan U. in Taiwan. The text is based upon her PhD thesis. Annotation c2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
