These papers are the outcome of a research project conducted at the Institute of Developing Economies between 2002 and 2004 to address the previously unexamined area of gender and development. The contributors examine such topics as economic development and gender disparities, population policy, female political participation, and women in factories. The studies of the historical and current experiences in Japan are compared to situations in several developing countries, including Thailand, Cuba and Turkey.
