Though the Wittelsbach dukes of Bavaria had a long history of art patronage and collecting, it was Wilhelm V, who ruled 1579-97, that realized the political and cultural value of a cohesive policy of artistic production, says Maxwell (art history, U. of Wisconsin-Oshkosh). In 1571 he hired Sustris (c. 1540-1600), and it is that artist's career that she traces in chapters on Italy to Augsberg 1560-73, princely patronage at Trausnitz Castle 1573-79, court architect and St. Michael's Church 1579-96, court commissions and the residence as kunstintendant in Munich 1850-96, and lost palaces and paper traces.
