商品簡介
The 25 papers of this volume were first presented at an eponymous conference held at the U. of Hull, UK (where both editors teach) in May 1999. The papers are grouped into four main subjects that supply evidence for Scandinavian-European contact; history and archaeology, linguistics, Christianity, and texts. Among the topics are the Norse place-names of Kintyre, early monasticism in Scandinavia, the image of the Viking in Anglo-Norman literature, Danish crusading activity, and the Viking boat burial in Scar, Sanday, in Orkney. Defining the nature of contact and how this changed with time and place is given particular emphasis. The contributors teach Danish, medieval history, Scandinavian studies, archaeology, Old Norse philology, comparative literature at universities in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, the UK and the US.
