Cultural Encounters at Cape Farewell

Historian Jensen; anthropologist and archaeologist Hans Christian Gullov (both National Museum of Denmark's Ethnographic Collection and Greenland Research Centre); and Kristine Raahauge, director of Nanortalik Museum and sometime mayor of Nanortalik, summarize the substantial archaeological, documentary, and ethnographic evidence they collected on the meeting of cultures at Cape Farewell, focusing especially on the East Greenlandic immigrants and the German Moravian mission in the 19th century. They also consider the prehistory of Cape Farewell and the East Greenlandic culture, which never managed to stem the tide of European dominance; and a bit of modern Greenland found today in Herrnhut.
