Ethnic Groups of Europe ─ An Encyclopedia

Cole (Connecticut College) presents the first in a planned five-book reference series on ethnic groups around the world. Some 100 contributions by 89 international academics and independent scholars describe ethnic and national groups in Europe. Cole's introductory essay provides students and general readers with an overview of the concept and practice of ethnicity, and historic and contemporary trends in Europe. Each of the 100-plus entries includes a concise summary of the group; an account of its origins and early history, cultural life, and recent developments; and a further reading list. The text includes information on global and national population figures and geographical distribution; the group's historic homeland; primary religions and languages; related groups; and key individuals, places, and events. Subsequent series volumes will focus on Africa and the Middle East; North, East and Central Asia; South Asia and the Pacific; and the Americas.
