From The Bonn To The Berlin Republic

The editors (professors of government at Georgetown U) present a collection of 20 papers that are presented with the straightforward goal of offering "a comprehensive portrait of German politics and society two decades after unification." Beyond the acknowledgement of the anniversary, no single theme has been chosen. Among the topics addressed by the papers are memories of East Germany in German culture and society, collective memory trends in united Germany, "Obamamania" and anti-Americanism as complementary concepts in contemporary German discourse, sexual politics and cultures in unified Germany, changing faces of citizenship, social integration, recent German film on unification, the German party system, higher education, foreign policy, the response to the financial crisis, the impact of economic unification, welfare and employment restructuring, and the German model of political economy. Eric Langenbacher is a Visiting Assistant Professor and Director of Honors and Special Programs, Department of Government, Georgetown University. He did his graduate work in the Government Department and Center for German and European Studies at Georgetown, completing his Ph.D. with Distinction in 2002. Recent edited publications include Launching the Grand Coalition: The 2005 Bundestag Election and the Future of German Politics (Berghahn Books, 2006) and Power and the Past: Collective Memory and International Relations, with Yossi Shain (Georgetown University Press, 2010).
