This work profiles the accomplishments and adventures of 15 Americans (including three women) in Egypt during the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries, from the earliest historical reference to Americans in Egypt to the beginning of WWI. Chronological chapters narrate each person's journey within the historical context of the physical development of major Egyptian cities, improvements in communications, and incursions of foreign powers into the government of Egypt. The accounts focus on what the Americans saw, thought, and did in Egypt, without analyzing their interpretations and experiences.
