Thornton (U. of Virginia) and Rex (U. of Puget Sound) have made few changes to their textbook for a course of one or two semesters for physics and engineering students at the sophomore or junior level who have completed a full-year introductory, calculus-based physics course for freshmen or sophomores. The features include a greater number of questions and problems than other textbooks, conceptual examples and strategy discussions, and photographs and biographical sketches of important physicists. Among the topics are the special theory of relativity, the structure of the atom, statistical physics, semiconductor theory and devices, particle physics, and cosmology and modern astrophysics.
