Anatomy and Physiology Laboratory Manual ─ Update

Amitrano and Tortora (science and health, Bergen Community College) offer students a lab manual meant to accompany anatomy and physiology textbooks and intended to guide them in the laboratory study of introductory anatomy and physiology. It examines every structure and function of the human body typically studied in these courses, with exercises using the scientific method and many illustrations, including photos, photomicrographs, and scanning electron micrographs. It includes dissection of the white rat and selected mammalian organs, physiological experiments, emphasis on the study of anatomy through histology, terms accompanying drawings and photos to be labeled, phonetic pronunciations and derivations for terms, diagrams of common lab equipment, lab report questions and reports at the end of each exercise, emphasis on safety, and three appendices on units of measurement, the periodic table, and eponyms. This edition has revised diagrams and updated anatomical terminology, with new pronunciations and derivations. Many lab exercises contain new computer-based tests. Other changes to exercises include updated nomenclature for the muscular system and a more complete listing of skeletal muscles; an expanded section with more spinal somatic reflex tests and the inclusion of the trigeminothalamic tract; description of the trigeminothalamic pathway; revised and expanded sections on the contraction of skeletal and smooth muscle tissue, the pituitary gland, the blood supply of the heart, sperm cells, and phases of the female reproductive cycle; expanded tables of blood vessels; and additional acid-based exercises.
