Religion in Geschichte und Gegenwart was first published in 1909-13, and this translation is from the 1998-2005 fourth German edition. Over the course of the intervening century, the reference has remained an authoritative source of information for scholars of religion and theology unmatched in its depth and breadth. The language is terse and compact, and few abbreviations are used in the text. For the English edition, the academic conventions of the Society of Biblical Literary are used when appropriate. Some minor articles of interest mostly to German readers have been omitted, and a few English language works have been added to bibliographies.
