Ethical Consumption ─ Social Value and Economic Practice

Drawn from discussions surrounding a series of conferences of European social anthropologists, this collection of nine articles on economic behavior examines the concept of ethical consumption and explores the ways in which political and ethical decision-making affects rational economic models. Topics discussed include fair trade and small farming; ethical consumption and development aid; society, class, and ethical consumption; conspicuous green anti-consumption; Quakers and religious ethics; and the ethics of developing local markets. Peter G. Luetchford is Senior Lecturer in Anthropology at the University of Sussex and has carried out field research in Costa Rica and Spain. He has published on ethics and the economy, including Fair Trade and a Global Commodity: Coffee in Costa Rica (Pluto Press, 2008) and he is co-editor of Hidden Hands in the Market: Ethnographies of Fair Trade, Ethical Consumption and Corporate Social Responsibility (Research in Economic Anthropology 2008).
