This reference is intended for students and a general readership. It consists of eight volumes, which were prepared under the leadership of editor Gary L. Albrecht (U. of Illinois at Chicago). The volumes (which are also sold separately) are organized with similar elements, giving this publishing endeavor the stamp of its primary conception as a resource destined to be integrated into an online database. The contents are included on the SAGE Reference Online platform, which contains information from some 200 handbooks and encyclopedias in the social sciences, thus linking them with other works on related topics including Handbook of Disability Studies and the Encyclopedia of Disability). (Perhaps because the world of references is evolving away from print and toward electronic access, the publisher has blurred a standard publishing and library convention that differentiates a "series" from a "set," the former being an open-ended, multi-volume endeavor in which each work can stand alone, and the latter, a multi-volume publication in which the volumes are interdependent.) Each volume is devoted to a particular aspect of disability, as follows: arts and humanities; assistive technology and science; the life course; education; employment and work; ethics, law, and policy; health and medicine; and rehabilitation interventions. Consistent in their structure, each volume contains the following chapters: introduction, background, and history; current issues, controversies, and solutions; chronology of critical events; biographies of key contributors in the field; annotated data, statistics, tables and graphs; annotated list of organizations and associations; print and electronic resources.
