Religion in Schools

In this volume, Russo (education, U. of Dayton) brings together 18 chapters that argue for and against topics related to religion in schools. Scholars of Education, law, and related disciplines from the US debate about aid to students in religiously affiliated nonpublic schools. Topics broached include whether public funds should be used to transport students or provide textbooks and instructional materials, and public school issues of prayer and devotional concerns, curriculum and instruction, access to facilities and distribution of religious materials, and religious dress. A sampling of topics includes: whether prayer should be allowed in graduations, whether teachers should be allowed to pray, whether to allow moments of silence, whether teachers can read the Bible and other sacred texts when students are present, and whether students should participate in pledging allegiance to the flag if their parents object to the words "under God."
