商品簡介
Creasman (history, Carnegie Mellon U.) focuses on censorship in late 16th- and early 17th-century Germany, and in particular four critical episodes in the urban Reformation. She analyzes censorship laws and the dynamics of communication in German cities and looks at how Protestant communities sought to find a "middle way" between popular agitation for reform and the Emperor's demands for allegiance to Catholicism. She considers how censorship suppressed unwanted ideas and fostered new ideologies, the lead up to the 30 Years War, the "calendar conflict" of the 1580s, and how censorship was also used to maintain peace as much as advance orthodoxy. She ends with a conclusion summarizing her findings. Annotation c2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
