Timmons (Spanish) and Boenig (English, both Texas A&M U.) present the first English translation of a 12th-century Latin version of miracles of the Virgin Mary that 13th-century Spanish poet Berceo used as the source of his Milagros de Nuestra Senora. They also explain how the work was used as a sacred text, placing it within the history of Christianity's evolving understanding of the Virgin's role in their lives, and suggest how changes in Church culture and governance after the Latin text was composed explain changes Berceo made is his Spanish poem.
