The Pyramid Texts were inscribed on the wall of third-millennium kings and queens and were discovered in the late 19th-century. This two-volume set has at its core the author's doctoral thesis, The Typological Structure of the Pyramid Texts and Its Continuities with Middle Kingdom Mortuary Literature (2006; U. of Chicago). In this presentation Hayes (Egyptology, Leiden University, The Netherlands) shifts emphasis to the formal division of Pyramid Texts into categories, adds a level of analysis, and separates the narrative (volume 1) from the supporting data (volume 2). His approach aims to discover the historical meanings of the texts and their function for individuals, rather than to reconstruct a system of belief. Harold M. Hays, Ph.D. (2006) in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, University of Chicago, is Assistant Professor of Egyptology at Leiden University. He has published extensively on the Pyramid Texts and ancient Egyptian ritual practice.
