The Seventh Book of Stromateis ─ Proceedings of the Colloquium on Clement of Alexandria (Olomouc, October 21-23, 2010)

The focus is on the seventh book because it was the last one Clement (ca. 150-215) finished--though he clearly had more planned--and because modern scholars find the language his clearest and his ideas set out more fully then elsewhere in his writing. The 16 essays, one in French and one in German, cover piety, perfection, and truth. Among the topics are the concept of pronoia and Clement's treatment of God's providence and the Gnostic's life choice, between Jewish models and philosophic-religious streams of Late Antiquity, divine and human mercy, Saint Paul as apostle of apatheia, Clement's demonstration method, and approximating church and school. Jana Platova, Ph.D. (2007) in Classical Philology, Masaryk University Brno, is Assistant Professor and Researcher at Palacky University Olomouc. Her publications include articles on Clement of Alexandria’s commentary on Scripture, and a Czech translation of the Stromateis (books I and III).
