商品簡介
A prisoner from the conquest of his hometown, Commagene, Mara wrote to his son from a Roman jail complaining of Roman imperialism but seeking solace should he be executed. His letter survives only in a single manuscript, in Aramaic from the seventh century. It was published with an English translation in 1855 but received little attention throughout the 20th century. Here classicists and religious scholars explore a number of topics relating to it. Among them are the Romanization of Commagene, local identities, and the letter; languages, cultural identities, and elites; Jesus as the ever-living lawgiver; a plea in favor of Semitic influence; Greek philosophy in it; and consolation from prison by Mara and Boethius.
