Ascher (history, Graduate School CUNY) considers why American, British and French governments did not take Hitler more seriously as a menace to the world when diplomats to Germany were doing their job "remarkably well," which is to "report as fully as possibly on conditions in the countries to which they are assigned." In this book, organized simply around the reports of diplomats from those countries, Ascher pays special attention to Hitler's personal traits as well as policy and beliefs. In the end he argues, along with Winston Churchill, that WWII was an unnecessary war in the sense that it was preventable if governments had listened to their diplomats' warnings. 作者簡介
Abraham Ascher is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History at the Graduate School of the City University of New York. He is the author of numerous works, including, most recently, A Community under Siege: The Jews of Breslau under Nazism (Stanford, 2007).
