商品簡介
The question of how to preserve or reconstruct Jewish peoplehood in the modern world consumed Jewish intellectuals in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Yet, despite a rich array of writing from Jewish nationalists, liberals, and socialists about how to sustain Jewish life in the diaspora, few high-quality English translations exist and the key works have never been collected in a single volume. As a result, few people appreciate the breadth of thinking on Jewish nationalism and the nature of Jewish peoplehood before the founding of a Jewish state.
This volume includes essays from a variety of intellectuals that focus on how to preserve or build Jewish peoplehood in multiethnic empires, how to redefine Jewish peoplehood during radical societal reconstruction, and how to maintain Jewish autonomy and national self-consciousness in liberal democratic states.
Volume editor Simon Rabinovitch has provided a substantial introductory essay and short introductions to each document that richly contextualize the primary sources for scholars and students.
