VanTassel-Baska and Avery (gifted education, College of William and Mary) offer 11 lessons for high-ability middle school students that concentrate on leadership skill development by using biographies of seven leaders from different fields (from Charles Darwin to Duke Ellington to Emily Dickinson) to inspire leadership behaviors, enhance skills in communication and collaboration, teach the concept of leadership, and strengthen metacognitive development. Based on the Common Core State Standards, lessons include the purpose, materials, activities and instructional strategies, questions, journal writing, assessment ideas, homework, extensions, and handouts, such as charts for biographical information culled from student research and study guides.
