商品簡介

Vossius is remembered primarily for his magnificent library and his philological studies, but in his day was considered, with Huygens (1629-95), the Dutch Republic's foremost students of nature. Contributors identified only by name explore his writings, demonstrating the breadth of his interests and particularly how he crossed back and forth between what are now distinct spheres of science and humanities. The topics include his challenge to the European world of learning, Vossius and the Septuagint, the development of his optics 1658-66, his Chinese utopia, manuscript notes in books from his collection, and the Bibliotheca Vossiana. The 10 papers are from a November 2007 peripatetic conference in Amsterdam, The Hague, and Leiden. Annotation c2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
