Between the Lines—Yang Lian's Poetry Through Translation

Bruno (China studies, School of Oriental and African Studies, London) presents a reflexive study of the translation of contemporary Chinese poems pivoting on the ideas that poetry translation is a interactive process of reading and writing, and that a study of such a process increases our understanding and aesthetic appreciation of the source text. As a case study, she takes the work of Yang Lian (b. 1954), who lived in China for 38 years and now lives in Britain. As he becomes more prominent as a dissident poet, his poetry is increasingly translated into English and other European languages, so many examples are available to discuss and compare.
