Xielin (Graduate U., Chinese Academy of Sciences), David Strangway (U. of British Columbia, Canada), and Feng Zhijun (China Democratic League, China), are all members, and the latter two co-chairs, of the task force Building an Environmentally-friendly Society through Innovation. The group held workshops in Vancouver and Oslo in 2008, and these three were charged with writing up a report of the information exchanged. It covers the current state of China's environmental protection; technology innovation for environmental and sustainable development; the environmental innovation system of China; regulation, standards, and enforcement; public participation and environmental innovation; and conclusions and recommendations. Seven appendices--nearly half the volume--present detailed case studies on such aspects as hydroelectric energy development, photovoltaics, sulfur dioxide from thermal power plants, and vehicle pollution.
