Pursuing the sense of crisis that desire between men causes, Duncan (Italian studies, U. of Bristol) looks in detail at male sexuality in a number of Italian narratives texts written since the late 19th century, reading them in the potentially antagonistic terms both of the historical conditions that produced them, and of the more recent debates on sexuality and sexual identity. He is concerned with consistent patterns of how homosexuality has been articulated during the 20th century, not with historical changes in either sexuality or literature.
