商品簡介
While he confesses that he is attracted to surrealism's use of the unconscious as a source of inspiration, Vicari, an essayist and film writer, notes that the surrealist movement's ranks contracted around redefinitions of what was and was not acceptable within the zone of the unconscious. Vicari is especially drawn to writers who were 'excommunicated' from surrealism. In this book, he considers the allegiance between modern art and certain kinds of mental illness in light of gender and queer issues, looking especially at male artists' fascination with the spectacle of mentally ill women who were put on display in the late 19th century. After an introduction on modern art and mental illness, some artists and movement considered are Andre Breton and the surrealist quest for modern selfhood, Georges Bataille and the incest wish, Michel Leiris and the cult of Judith, the surrealist gaze between men, the cinema of Man Ray, and Cocteau in rehab.
