Cote, who has been a classroom teacher, community college instructor, and gifted and talented resource specialist, and Blauvelt, a teacher in various settings and gifted and talented resource specialist, provide teachers, gifted program directors, and resource specialists with nine science lessons for high-ability learners in grades six through eight that focus on the concepts and definitions of physical and chemical change. The lessons encourage students to use nontraditional methods to demonstrate learning and include a rubric that evaluates them in the areas of engagement, creativity, synthesis, interpersonal ability, and verbal communication. Each includes lists of concepts, materials, grade-level expectations, and student objectives, and explanations of how the lesson is introduced, how students demonstrate recognition of concepts, how they apply their knowledge, and how they solve related problems, followed by lesson plans (which allow for differentiation and adaptation) and additional notes on extensions, potential problems, and other tips.
