A substantially annotated bibliography of books written by Japanese scholars in English from 1950 to 1995 and two dozen essays illuminate a field that has been flourishing for decades but is little known in the western world except for the few works published in the US or Europe. Most of the essays have been previously published in local journals in England or Japanese and have been revised and updated for the collection. They generally consider Old and Middle English phonological, grammatical, semantic, and lexical issues, though some address broader topics both chronologically and thematically. An intriguing one explores manuscript punctuation as evidence for linguistic change. The selection of material is not intended to be comprehensive, but representative of the field as a way of letting the west know about it. No subject index.
