商品簡介
The Indian city of Bangalore, renamed from Bengaluru by the British, has little contact with its past, according to the editors (all of the National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bangalore, India), who present this reader in an effort to set the past in dialogue with the present and to show how major changes, whether specific events such as the fall of Bengaluru to the British in 1791 or longer processes such as the emergence of modern industry at the end of the 19th century, were "imagined" by contemporaries. They present 30 writings, arranged in sections concerned with the fall of Bengaluru, Bangalore under the British, the growth in the importance of education, the birth of modernity, the consolidation of India as a "guardian state," and the present time.
