Seen from the dawn of the twenty-first century, the essays of Eduardo Lourenco (b. 1923) are a philosophical arch that spans the twentieth century, analyzing it and revealing its imaginary borders, dreams, contradictions, ghosts and angels. The symbol the Portuguese essayist derives from the previous century, that is, the figure that best portrays the cultural oscillations of that century, is the labyrinth. EDUARDO LOURENCO (1923-) is Portugal's most celebrated literary and cultural critic today. He is recognized as the leading authority on the foremost Portuguese-language poet of the twentieth century, Fernando Pessoa. Lourenco's vast writings on Portuguese literature and culture--somewhat the Portuguese equivalent of the essays of the Spaniards Jose Ortega y Gasset and Miguel Unamuno--have garnered two major prizes, the Charles Veillon European Essay Prize, for 1988, and the Camoes Prize, for 1996.
