Gendering Post-socialist Transition

This text is a collection of new research into the dynamics of gender and the politics of gender equality in formerly socialist (post 1989) countries of Central and South Eastern Europe. Each chapter is a study on a particular country, including Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Macedonia, Romania, Serbia-Bosnia-Herzegovina-Montenegro, Slovakia, and the Ukraine. They explore gender relations in education, employment and poverty; the role of popular media in reconstructing gender identity; the gender dynamics of homelessness; the social construction of care work; the queer movement and the oppression of sexual minorities; third-wave feminism and national experience; single parents and kinship networks; women's civic and political participation; feminism between nationalism and demographic politics.
